Workshop Program
A substantial part of its Technical Assistance Gateway program, Chicago Community Loan Fund offers a series of workshops focused on relevant topics for partners, community developers and potential borrowers. The courses are designed to educate and engage organizations in the field of community development … from new participants to industry veterans … and will help lay the foundation for successful project planning.
Each workshop, led by professional subject leaders, includes presentations that explore key components of the community development process and relevant topics to consider, including access to capital, project design and funding strategies.

In a virtual presentation conducted on December 17, 2020, Akousa Goosby, Community Outreach Representative at Elevate Energy, presented Energy Efficiency and Savings During a Winter Pandemic. In this workshop, Goosby shared innovative ideas on smarter energy use and provide solutions to help affected communities maintain economic sustainability during the pandemic. On November 23, 2020, Kathy Booton Wilson, M.S.W., L.C.S.W., Chief Strategy Officer of Deborah’s Place, presented an in-depth analysis of homelessness in Chicago and how developers and community members can help tackle this issue particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis. Held Thursday, October 15, 2020, the popular session Community Relations, Public Participation was held by Sean Harden, CCLF’s Technical Assistance and Special Initiatives Consultant. Using personal experience as a platform, Harden shared ideas to gain acceptance and support from area residents of your community development project. Practical Construction Tips for Becoming a Successful Developer was presented virtually by Shoshiwa Shields, Construction Workforce Development Leader. During the Thursday, September 17, 2020, session, Shields shared behind-the-scenes considerations of her various projects, including her work as Project Manager on the 35th Street CTA platform in Chicago and the redevelopment project plan to revitalize a West Lawndale business corridor. Wednesday, September 9, 2020, ushered in the debut of CCLF’s Lunch and Learn: Virtual Rapid-Fire Sessions, a series of interactive, virtual presentations led by industry leaders discussing the most pertinent topics. Akousa Goosby, Community Organizer at Elevate Energy, joined us for lunch and share innovative ideas on smarter energy use for all which could result in vibrant urban communities. William Skalitzky, of Applegate & Thorne-Thomsen, continued CCLF’s virtual workshop series with the presentation, Regulatory Requirements: Legal issues of housing and community development. During the August 18, 2020, session, Bill led an in-depth analysis of Sample Regulatory Agreements, HUD Regulatory Agreements, LIHTC Extended Use Agreements, Affordable Housing Program (AHP) Recapture Agreements and more. On August 6, 2020, Taft West, CCLF’s Vice President of Technical Assistance and Sustainability, moderated The COVID-19 Crisis and Housing: A CCLF Panel Discussion, featuring distinguished panelists – Johnna Lowe, Senior Program Manager, C.S.H. , Corporation for Supportive Housing; Harriet Mims, Director of Management Services, Interfaith Housing; and Steve Thomas, President, 5T Management/Construction – who shared insight on the landlord/tenant relationship in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Belinda Li, Founder & Chief Consultant of CiTTA Partnership, led Social Enterprise: How your organization can do good and do well Wednesday, June 17, 2020. Belinda guided an interactive workshop introducing attendees to the concept of social enterprise, exploring different business model ideas, and providing attendees a chance to sketch out their own potential social enterprise business ideas. On May 28, 2020 CCLF held a PPP Webinar. In this webcast, Chicago Community Loan Fund provided guidance to help you identify what you’ll need to address to maximize forgiveness of your PPP loan. As we mentioned during the presentation, more guidance would become available. There is more information to the updates for the PPP, as viewable here.
In light of the COVID-19 Pandemic, CCLF’s Technical Assistance Workshop presentations shifted to a virtual platform.
